How To Get Yourself To Work Out

Going to the gym and working out on a consistent basis can be very difficult for a lot of people. I remember myself struggling with this issue for a long time. Although my local gym was just around the corner, I still didn’t go and work out consistently. One day I hit the gym and the other day I made an excuse. Over time the excuses increased and I stopped hitting the gym for more than half a year. I wasted a lot of money this way…

The reason for this was simple: I had the wrong motivation! I hit the gym in order to lose weight and get my body into a good shape. But after working out for some month I still didn’t notice a huge difference when I looked at my body. So after a short time my entire motivation faded away. I stopped hitting the gym for more than half a year although I had payed a lot of money for it. I didn’t do any sports or major physical activity during that time and on top of that I didn’t eat very healthy.

I was getting more and more out of shape but I still didn’t hit the gym...

Fortunately, as time passed I learned a lot of new things. I finally figured out that the reason for my failure was my wrong motivation. Although I wanted to lose weight and get my body into a good shape, I linked massive pain to working out. Hitting the gym was an immensely unpleasurable activity for me. So I simply couldn’t bring up enough motivation to stick with it. Being in shape was not pleasurable enough to push through the daily pain of working out.

Soon after that I had a new realization: Working out and consciously using your physical body actually makes you feel good. As Anthony Robbins used to say: „Motion = Emotion“. By consciously and actively using the body, ones entire state changes: You feel revitalized, balanced, relaxed and strong. This was a huge epiphany for me and it literally changed everything. From now on I had a new motivation to hit the gym: Feeling good and starting my day in a productive way. Instead of wanting to lose weight, I wanted to instantly feel good and productive at the beginning of the day in order to set a productive frame for the rest of my day. So I started working out every day on a consistent basis. And I still do: I get up in the morning, drink half a liter of water, do some stretching excercises and some excercises for the back, eat a healthy breakfast and then hit the gym.

I don’t care if I lose weight or get my body in shape. I mean, to be honest, it’s a cool thing. But it’s not my main motivation. The instant pleasure and the good emotions I get after working out are a much stronger motivation. By hitting the gym as early as possible during the day, those positive emotions and that vitality from working out remains for the entire rest of the day. And isn’t that awesome? Think about it. You can start your day with a peak of good emotions and vitality. And that vitality will accompany you throughout your entire day until you go to sleep. Now that sounds like a good deal, doesn’t it?

So if you’ve got the same problem as I had and don’t have enough motivation to hit the gym, simply change your motivation from « losing weight and getting in shape » to « getting good emotions for the entire day ». If you don’t believe me: Go to the gym tomorrow, work out really hard and then observe how your body and your mind feel after that. I’m sure you will be astonished... And more importantly you will start to link massive pleasure to working out.

If this still doesn’t get the job done, here are some little tricks I use to make sure I hit the gym on a consistent, daily basis:

  • I prepare my sports bag the evening before and place it right on the chair in my bedroom. Awesome: The first thing I see when I stand up is my sports bag. This reminds me every morning that I have committed to hit the gym.

  • I go to the gym as early as possible during my daily schedule. Usually I stand up, drink some water, make my warmup excercises, eat some fruit and then I hit the gym. The earlier I hit the gym, the less resistance there is. Just make it a habit…

  • I am not allowed to shower at home. I’ve built in this little mechanism into my daily schedule in order to force myself to hit the gym. I am only allowed to shower at the gym. This is a way of making success inevitable. Important: If you can’t hit the gym in the morning because of your daily schedule this may not be for you J

So I hope this little blog entry helped you shift your motivation and your view on working out. Really, working out is such a pleasurable thing if you start focussing on it the right way. And the coolest thing is: By having good emotions and feeling a peak of vitality every day, you will automatically lose weight and get your body in perfect shape at the same time.

This is one of the best deals of your life...
